I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve heard someone say they’re “passing through” Estes Park.
That’s usually the plan.
Then lunch turns into an afternoon walk along the Riverwalk. Somebody spots elk grazing near the golf course. You decide to drive Trail Ridge Road before heading home, and suddenly it’s dinner time. The next thing you know, you’re looking at hotel availability because one day wasn’t enough.
Estes Park has a habit of slowing people down. It doesn’t ask you to rush from one attraction to the next collecting photos for social media. It rewards the people who linger a little longer, who pull over at another overlook, who decide one more hike sounds like a good idea even though their legs disagree.
Summer might be the busiest season, but it’s also when Estes feels most alive. The rivers are running high from snowmelt, patios are full, wildlife seems to appear around every corner, and the mountains somehow convince you that your phone doesn’t need to come out every five minutes.
If you’re putting together your own summer bucket list, these are the experiences I’d make room for.
