Caravanserai - (Turkish)
1. A large inn or hostelry, built around a court, for accommodating caravans
and their animals. The caravanserai were rest stops for travelers, as well
as locales for the exchange of goods, gossip and ideas.
2. An open stage for belly dance performers & musicians.
Caravaners of the Royal Road, from East and West, gather at the Caravansari,
weary from the day's travels but curious to view and trade exotic items from
far-away places. As the evening wears on and the moon rises over the walls of
the Caravansarai, drummers begin tapping a beat on tablas, doumbek and frame drum.
Musicians playing the oud and viol, nai and mizmar join in their aural magic drawing
dancers to the fire. Here in the heart of the courtyard gardens, cultures meet,
share their music, and dance.
The Witches' Ball Caravanserai will take place at the outdoor stage in the walled garden of the Lucie Stern Center. Here we will recreate the romance of starlit desert nights, and the sensual beauty of the women who practiced the ancient art of belly dance. Bay Area performers will present examples of Tribal Dance from the Middle Eastern countries traversed by the fabled Silk Road, the route that carried riches from China to the West1.
At 8 pm, Petra Pino and friends will perform the Cain Dance in the main Ballroom, just prior to the presentation of the Gaia's Guardian Award.
At 10:00, Ms. Pino will perform the Sword Dance for our audience in the main Ballroom
Different performers and musicians will perform on the Caravansari Stage throughout the evening2.
Our Dj will spin dance tunes in the main ballroom all evening. He is happy to take requests.
