THE ELEPHANT IN OUR CIRCLES : PAGANS, TOLERANCE AND THE WAR IN IRAQ.

---------------------------------------------------

“America isn't easy. America is advanced citizenship. You've got to want it bad, because it's going to put up a fight. …You want free speech? Let's see you acknowledge a man whose words make your blood boil who is standing center stage advocating at the top of his lungs that which you would spend a lifetime opposing at the top of yours.”

From An American President by Aaron Sorkin

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Before we begin this month’s newsletter I would like to mention the elephant that is currently dancing in many of our Circles.  It’s huge, it’s beginning to trash the house and many people are pretending that it’s not there.  That elephant is conflict; both the one overseas and the one here at home.

Lately, I’ve noticed a tendency on the part of some Pagans to assume that all Pagans are in agreement on the war and that they all think X.  When certain people discover that opinions differ, they take the stance that we all should be in agreement about the war.  By that, of course, they mean that we should all agree with them.  I’ve even seen Pagans take the position that you can’t be Pagan unless you agree with their particular views on this issue.

Oh, really?

It seems to me that the old joke still applies: If you put 6 Pagans in a room, you’ll get 7 opinions.  Since that is true about matters pertaining to ritual tools and casting deosil, how can it not be true about other things?

We have all heard a great deal of self righteous bombast from people on opposite sides of this issue. To our credit as a Tribe, we have many, many intelligent, good hearted people, right, left and center, struggling to make sense of this thing and to walk their spiritual path with best intent and highest good for all.

Speaking of the center; I receive emails on a daily basis from Pagan people who currently sit in the middle ground and who are wondering when we’re going to have the sort of informed, factual debate we expect to have in a free country.  These people are numerous and they have opinions on this issue that range all over the map, but they aren’t screaming at one another so no one is taking any notice.

To tell the truth, a great many of our folks are keeping quiet because they don’t want to loose friends or Circle mates over this thing.  Thus, the elephant.     Meanwhile, the hot heads among us rave at each other and nobody is really talking about the problem, which is tolerance.  Theirs and ours, yours and mine.

You see, it is easy to be tolerant with people who agree with you.  And it is pleasant to think that all Pagans can agree.  It’s pleasant, but it isn’t very practical.

The hard part of citizenship, the important part, the part our Founders wrote the Constitution to protect, comes in when someone’s opinion differs from yours…a lot.

So I wanted to take a moment and say this: Do not choke off debate in our community.  Do not pretend that it doesn’t (or shouldn’t) exist.  We can and will disagree with one another.  We will debate this and other issues passionately and with great conviction and, I hope, intelligently.

Here are some things to keep in mind in the coming months:

·        It is possible to support our troops and still be against the war.

·        It is possible to protest this war using the tactics of peaceful, civil disobedience and still love one’s country.  As Molly Ivans and others have pointed out, dissent is not unpatriotic, even during wartime.  The history of civil disobedience and public protest runs the gamut from Ghandi to Martin Luther King, from Emily Pankhust and Margaret Sanger to the students in Tiananmen Square.   All of these people loved their country while disagreeing strongly with the actions taken by their government.

·        It is possible to support military action and still work within viable & ancient traditions of Pagan practice.  The Code of the Honorable Warrior; who in the worlds of T.H. White is one who believes in “might for right”, teaches its followers protect the innocent and to defend liberty.  This path is thousands of years old and can be found within Celtic, Nordic, Native American and Asian traditions, just to name a few.

·        Citizenship is an on-going process.  It requires that we show up, pay attention and tell the truth. So while it’s easy to be against something it is much, much harder to be a positive force for change.   Active citizens will decry injustice, but they will also educate themselves on the issues, decide what they are for and support that.

·        History has shown us that it is possible to win a war and loose the peace.  This will happen again if good hearted men and women can’t reach out to one another and work together to make a better world for all our children.

Right now, courageous people in every country are working for the Highest Good of all.   Each will do so in their own way.  If we believe that different spiritual paths can lead to enlightenment, then we also must acknowledge that individuals can and will contribute in different ways while We, The People share a common vision of peace, abundance, freedom and safety for all.

So, let’s acknowledge the elephant, and in doing so, let us honor those men and women who serve during wartime, support free speech and civil liberties here at home, lead by example, gather food and medical supplies for those in need, raise their children with love and tolerance, and work for peace and freedom worldwide.  In closing, I will ask that we make our views known to one another in ways that are respectful, truthful, compassionate and honorable.

Toward that end, I will leave you with this Meditation.

Meditation

I am mindful this morning of those among us who hold the lives of the men
and women serving our country in their prayers, seeking the safe return of all
who have been deployed;

I am mindful this morning of those among us who hold the lives of the
civilian women and men and children of Iraq in their prayers, seeking their
safety amidst the conflict;

I am mindful this morning of those among us who are filled with emotions -
of sadness, of anger, of resolve, of doubt, of uncertainty - which seem to
overwhelm them, as they seek a balance of spirit;

I am mindful this morning of those among us who feel disconnected, through
their passionate understanding of either support or opposition, but who
would welcome inclusive arms to embrace them even in their differences;

I am mindful this morning of our duty as a congregation to hold, in thoughts
and prayers and hugs, all those who choose to walk with us along the path
of life, not only those with whom we agree but even more so those with whom we
differ.

So, this is my prayer for the morning: that in our own community we find
the wisdom, the courage, the connection, the acceptance - ah, yes, the all-
encompassing love which is the essence and source of peace - that none be
afraid.

Amen and Blessed Be.

from the Rev. Dr. Randolph W.B. Becker of the Williamsburg Unitarian Universalists. Written on March 23rd, 2003.

WEBSITES FOR PRAYER, MEDITATIONS, SUPPORTING THE TROOPS & YOUR THOUGHTS ABOUT THE WAR:

As always, Wren & Fritz at The Witches Voice have done their part to provide a way for our community to voice their feelings.  They were among the first (and one of the most effective) organizations to meet our needs after 9/11.  Now they are providing the same sort of service for our people during the war.

Currently they posted two very significant forums for the EarthWise Tribe.  In this first one, Pagans can voice your feelings about the war and read how other Pagans feel:

http://www.witchvox.com/qotw/qw_detail.html?id=104

and just recently, they have posted a forum where Pagans can post their meditations, prayers and support for the troops.  Please keep in mind that it is possible to support our troops, regardless of how we may feel about the war.

http://www.witchvox.com/military/troops.html

This section contains information on support for military families and gives urls containing information for those who want to send emails, phones cards or supplies overseas.

This section is a stark reminder to us all of just how many Pagans and/or their loved ones are currently serving in this conflict.

The Witches Voice provides this level of support for our people with a very small, volunteer staff.  They need your help to keep this invaluable website up and running.  If you value the work they do, please consider sponsoring the Voice today: http://www.witchvox.com/twv/sponsor.html.  Any donation, no matter how small, is greatly appreciated by the folks at The Voice.

In contrast to The Witches Voice,  which has a Pagan focus and is a non-profit site run by a very small group of volunteers, Belief Net is a commercial venture with a large, paid, full time staff.   As a result, they were able to put up a more elaborate section for posting thoughts, meditations and prayers.  They currently offer pages that include prayers for the Iraqi people, POWs, Coalition & American soldiers, Human Shields, Peace and the President.  http://www.beliefnet.com

If you submit a prayer to Belief Net you have the option of choosing an icon to represent your faith.  They offer icons in the form of candles, pentagrams, Thor’s Hammers, doves and hearts, as well as those representing mainstream faiths.  As a result, you’ll see the prayers of Wiccans, Pagans and Heathens next to those of Jews and Muslims and Christians.

As international humanitarian efforts get underway, FCE will list ways in which Pagans can help those in need, both here and abroad.

INTERFAITH PEACE & PRAYER FLAGS

Many people are currently flying peace & prayer flags.   You can make your own or buy a flag to fly on-line.  Here is a lovely website that sells interfaith peace flags:

http://www.karunaarts.com/

One Pagan woman in Ventura, CA has created prayer flags to support the troops.  She writes:

In my yard I am flying red, white and blue prayer flags adorned with spirals
and peace signs. Tied among the flags are yellow ribbons asking for the
safety of all life in the combat zones, in Iraq, in Afghanistan, in Bosnia,
in all places of this troubled earth. If any one has a specific name they
would like added to my prayers, please send it. I will write it on a yellow
ribbon and tie it to the flags.
Today the Santa Anna winds send my prayers for peace and safe returns
fiercely southwest towards the mighty Pacific, an ocean named for peace
.

This comes from: http://www.witchvox.com/military/troops.html

If you or your Circle have a creative way to celebrate your faith, send energies out, promote peace or support the troops, please send your ideas to: info@fullcircleevents.org and we will print them in the next newsletter.

KEO:

At the end of year 2005, the satellite KEO will be launched into space.  Some 50,000 years later it will return to earth, intact to offer our faraway, future, distant grandchildren a collection of our messages designed just for them.

What do you want to tell them? http://www.keo.org/uk/pages/introuk.html

EGG CRAFTS:

Seed Eggs - By Pat & family
We poke a tiny hole in both ends of an egg & very gently blow out the "stuffings". We then decorate the egg with symbols or write our hopes, etc on them.( A listing of colors and their meanings can be found in "The Sabbats" by Edain McCoy if you wish to use it.) We make one of the holes a little bigger & into it we place herb seeds. Along with the seeds we place our intentions of what we would like to see grow in our lives. We then go outside, cast a circle, dig a hole & place our eggs into the hole. Hence we have planted the seeds of growth! Another brief little ceremony we have done in the past is to place a candle in each room & as a family go from room to room chanting "banish winter, welcome spring" & each family member takes a turn lighting a candle to welcome back the light of spring.

Wheel of the Year~ Michelle
2 pieces of heavy paper per child
old magazines or catalogs
glue, crayons, markers, glitter, any materials to decorate wheels Wing Backed push pins (one per child)
To start introducing young children to the Wheel of the Year.
*** Adult Premake
Cut out two circles (per child) of the same size ( about the size of a dinner plate) on heavy paper (I use manila paper) Fold one circle into 8 equal size pie pieces On the outer edge of each pie piece write each Sabbat name in order of occurrence (I started with Samhain on top). Second Circle, cut one pie piece shape out of the circle
*** Child Ready
Give each child the circle with Sabbats written on it along with old magazines, and/or catalogs. Talk about what each holiday means, and let the children pick pictures out of the magazines/catalogs that they feel represent each Sabbat. Cut out the pictures and glue them underneath each Sabbat.
Second circle allow the children to decorate it however they want. When children are done decorating and glue/paint ( or whatever you used to decorate with) is dry. Push winged back push pin through the center with holiday wheel in the back. Spin the wheel.. your all done now.. Enjoy :)
*** Notes
We hung ours on the fridge, the children love to spin the wheels to display the next Sabbat. I have found that these wheels, often spark children to ask many questions. They talk about what there picture representation means and it gives them a chance to talk about the Sabbats. I do these once a year with my children, as they grow it's interesting to see how there interpretation of the Sabbats change each year. With my younger sons, we use this as a game wheel, spin the wheel, and what ever Sabbat it lands on, we read a story or poem about it, or just talk about it. There are tons of uses for this :)Enjoy

Egg Candles
Use the bottom half of egg shells to hold mini tapers or other small candles. To anchor the candles in the shell, drop hot wax into the bottom of shell and press candle into wax. Set these candles in and because they can get hot!

Decorated Eggs
Here are some ideas for decorating hollowed out eggs to bring out each year for Ostara…
-Paint the eggs with any kind of paint (tempera, acrylic, watercolor, spray, or nail polish). -Coat eggs with glue and roll in glitter.
-Cover egg with decoupage and apply small squares of multi-colored tissue paper. Cover with decoupage and let dry between each layer. With each layer come new color combinations and a stronger, more durable egg.
-Make speckled eggs by dipping toothbrush in paint then running your fingers across bristles to spatter the paint on the eggs
.

Growing Ostara/Easter Baskets
Supplies:
Empty 1/2 gal. Milk Cartons
Potting Soil
Grass Seed (fast growing if you have it)
Stuff to Decorate Carton
Take empty milk cartons, cut down to 4-5" high. You can cover this with contact paper or construction paper and decorate. Fill 2/3 full with potting soil, the generously cover with grass seed. Have children water daily; grass should grow in about 4-7 days. With remaining carton, cut a handle to staple to the basket. Fill with decorated eggs.

Dying Eggs the Natural way

Why not color your eggs using nature's very own dyes? It's possible to come up with a great number of colors using natural ingredients that can easily be found in almost any kitchen.

Pale Red: Fresh beets or cranberries, frozen raspberries
Orange: Yellow onion skins
Light yellow: Orange or lemon peels, carrot tops, celery seed or ground cumin
Yellow: Ground turmeric
Pale green: Spinach leaves
Green-gold: Yellow Delicious apple peels
Blue: Canned blueberries or red cabbage leaves
Beige to brown: Strong brewed coffee

To dye the perfect Easter eggs the natural way, here's what to do:
1. Put eggs in a single layer in a pan. Pour water in pan until the eggs are covered.
2. Add about a teaspoon of vinegar.
3. Add the natural dye appropriate to the color you want your eggs to be.
(The more eggs you are dying at a time, the more dye you will need to use.)
4. Bring water to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes.
5. Remove the substance you used to color the eggs. Put eggs in a bowl.
If you want your eggs to be a darker shade, cover them with the dye and let them stand overnight in the refrigerator.

Onion Skin Eggs
One of my favorite egg dyes is with onion skins! Gather lots of onion skins; the dry outer layers. (try to get a good variety of colors--I like plain brown best; red onion also makes a good color) Gently wrap them around*raw* eggs and hold them in place with rubber bands. Hard boil the eggs like usual. Unwrap them and WOW! Beautiful colors and designs! You may polish with vegetable oil for a nice gloss. This is a natural dye and the eggs are still quite edible! Happy eggs-ploration!!

Wax Eggs
It's fun to write something on the egg with a light colored crayon - white is the most fun. The dye doesn't stick to the wax crayoned letters and they appear white (or brown if it's a brown egg) after the egg is dyed.

Rubber Band Wraps
Materials:
Egg dye:(For and extra bright color use food coloring paste, available at party supply shops. Dissolve a dab of paste or 6 drops of reg. liquid food coloring in a cup of hot water. Stir in 1/4 cup of vinegar)
Rubber bands, (various length widths long enough go around the egg several times)

Wrap rubber bands around the egg, covering it completely. When you dip the covered egg, the dye will seep under the bands in some areas and be blocked out in other areas. Remove from the dye when the color is bright enough. Blot dry with paper towels and remove the rubber bands. If you wish, repeat with a new color. (If the rubber bands pop off the egg, try using thicker ones.

Marbelized eggs
Materials: Egg dye, 1 Tablespoon vegetable oil

Lightly stir the oil into a bowl of egg dye. Immediately dip the egg into the liquid. Or stand the egg in a small cup and slowly spoon the oil-water mixture over it. When the egg dries, repeat the steps with another color for an interesting color combining effect. TIP: For cleanup, wash all dipping containers in hot soapy water and rinse with vinegar to get rid of oil.

Finger-paint eggs
Materials: Paper plates, tempera paint
Put a few colors of paint on the paper plate. Hold the egg n the ends with your thumb and finger so you can rotate it while you're stamping. Dip your finger in the paint, dab off the excess on a paper towel, then gently press your finger onto the egg.

Crepe Paper Eggs
Supplies:
Boiled Eggs
Tissue Paper or Crepe Paper

Wet the egg and place pieces of colored tissue paper on it. Set it aside to dry. When the egg dries the tissue paper falls off and the colors stay behind.

Polka Dot Eggs
1. Dip a boiled egg in yellow dye.
2. When dry glue on hole punched dots. (great for fine motor!)

THE FUTURE OF PAGAN TEA NIGHT:

This just in from Eileen in Fremont:

Laurie and I started Pagan Tea Nite in hopes of providing a space for Pagans in the area to network and get to know each other better.  It has always been YOUR event as much as it has been ours.  It's been 2 years since we began hosting Pagan Tea Nite, and through these Tea Nites we've met so many wonderful people and made many friends. We would really appreciate everyone's feedback to make our Tea Nites a better event.

What do you want to see happen at Tea Nite?  Would you be interested in discussion groups, and if so, what topics?  Would you be interested in pagan-related classes/workshops, and if so, on what (and related to this, would you be willing to TEACH a pagan related class/workshop at Tea Nite)?  What kinds of events would you like to see happen (ex: Bardic Nite)?  Lastly, would you prefer the Tea Nites to be on a consistent date (ex: 1st & 3rd Friday of the month), or do you like how it is now (a different Friday each month).  We hope you can take the time to answer these questions, we would love to hear back from all of you!  We will definitely take the time to read and think about everyone's  responses, and try to make what you want happen!

So please, let us know what you think.  Your opinions and ideas are very important to us.  And expect to see many positive changes to Pagan Tea Nite in the next few months! firedrumcircle@hotmail.com

Blessings,
~Eileen & Laurie http://www.firedrumcircle.com/

Editors Note: Please choose those Pagan organizations and events which you feel are worthwhile and give them your best support.  If you don’t support a Group or Event that’s important to you now, then you may look for it in the future to find that it’s gone.

CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL WANTS QUILTS:

While we wait to hear what’s needed abroad, please remember that there is good that you can do right here at home.  Here is one example:

“Lend your creative talents to provide blankets and quilts for the babies of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital.  The quilt or blanket given to each of our special babies will be used during their stay with us and taken home as one of their first keepsakes.

During this often stressful time, the quilts and blankets offer a taste of home and are cherished by each family.  The families are so grateful that someone has taken the time to make something for their baby.

Our goal is to have a quilt or blanket for every baby in the NICU.  Last year, we cared for over 1,500 babies.

For quilts we request pre-washed fabric such as cotton or flannel in colors and patterns of your choice.  Quilters love to use their orphan blocks for quilts or you may also choose to use a premade decorative panel which is easy to back with a layer of batting between.  The types of blankets requested are knit or crocheted.

We would like the size of the quilts or blankets to be between 24 and 36 inches.  This best covers the needs of all sizes of babies.

For further details or questions regarding this program, please contact Kate Teague via e-mail at RN.Kat@lpch.stanford.edu.  Thank you for your interest in our Blankets for Babies.”

WOMEN’S HISTORY:

March was Women’s History Month.  Do you know what your grandmother did during the war? (Oh, pick a war, any war).

From career women in ancient Egypt to the 'first feminist', this month the BBC history website discusses how war can became the catalyst for change in many women’s lives.

SPIRAL DANCE TOUR:

This came in from Ann Hill at Serpentine Music: http://www.serpentinemusic.com

Hi all,

Spiral Dance, a really great Pagan band from Adelaide, is coming to town this Fall. I know this is a difficult time to think ahead and plan, but if anyone knows any venues they might book in the Bay Area/Santa Cruz area while they're here, I think it would be great to have them perform. Any concert promoters out there? Feel free to contact Nick directly at sage@picknowl.com.au
